  • 【約母量八儂】(Iak-bó-liãng poih-nâng) Probably eight persons.
  • 【買一隻雞做湯】(Bói chék-chiah koi tsò-thng) Buy a fowl and make soup.
  • 【一隻鴨𤇢。一隻鵝浮】(Chék-chiah ah pek, chek-chiah gô phû) Roast one duck and fry one goose.
  • 【割四斤牛肉。三斤羊肉。二斤豬朥】(Kuah sì-kṳn gû-bah, saⁿ kṳn iêⁿ-bah, nõⁿ-kṳn tṳ-lâ) Buy (lit. cut) four catties of beef, three catties of mutton, two catties of lard.
  • 【火腿去高菜館挈】(Húe-thúi khṳ̀ kau-tshài-kuán khiéh) For ham, go to the compradore and get it.
  • 【挈一腿】(Khiéh chék-thúi) Get one ham.
  • 【荷蘭薯還了有亞無】(Hô-lan-tsṳ̂ huân-lióu ũ a-bô?) Have you any more potatoes?
  • 【有加零些】(Ũ ke lân-ló) I have a few more.

  • 【十六粒烙半生熟】(Tsáp-lák liáp luah pùaⁿ-chheⁿ sék) Half-fry sixteen of them.
  • 【賰十四粒做粿】(Tshûn tsáp-sì liáp tsò-kúe) The remaining fourteen make them into cakes.
  • 【着選鮮的】(Tiéh suán chhiⁿ–kâi) You must choose fresh ones.
  • 【就是此樣生】(Chiũ-sĩ chièⁿ-seⁿ) That’s all.
  • 【飯勿烳較糜】(Pn̄g màiⁿ-pû khah-mîⁿ) Don’t boil the rice to soft.
  • 【咖喱勿煮過薟】(Ka-lî màiⁿ-tsṳ́ khah-hiam) Don’t make the curry too hot.
  • 【食飯無鹹酸食毋落】(Chiáh-pn̄g bô kiâm-sng chiáh m̃-lóh) To take rice without relish it cannot be eaten.
  • 【伊請儂滂沛在】(I chhiáⁿ-nâng phâng-phài tsãi) He invited people to lots of dishes.
  • 【伊的鹹酸㩼樣在。食毋了】(I kâi kiâm-sng tsōi-iēⁿ tsāi, chiáh m̃-lióu) His relishes were of many kinds, we could’nt eat them all.
  • 【儂儂食到飽】(Nâng-nâng chiáh-kàu-pá) Every body ate until they had enough.
  • 【伊的伙頭會在】(I kâi húe-thâu õi-tsãi) His cook is very clever.
  • 【樣樣伊煮來好在】(Iēⁿ-Iēⁿ i tsṳ́-lâi hó-tsãi) Every thing he made was very nice indeed.
  • 【頭彩就食雞囝湯。佮麪包焙的】(Thâu-tshái chiũ chiáh koi-kiáⁿ-thng, kah mīⁿ-pau pūe–kâi) First of all, we had chicken soup and toasted bread.
  • 【了羊肉烙。佮荷蘭薯】(Lióu iêⁿ-bah luah, kah hô-lan-tsṳ̂) Then mutton-chop and potatoes.
  • 【了火雞浮。煴芥辣。了還了㩼㩼樣】(Lióu húe-koi phû, ùn kài-luáh, lióu huân-lióu tsōi-tsōi iēⁿ) Then turkey fried in oil, and eaten with mustard, and many other kinds.

  • 【有一尾我出一百錢賣魚的儂還了毋好賣我】(Ũ chék-búe uá tshut chék-peh-chî, bōi-hṳ̂–kâi-nâng huân-lióu m̃-hàuⁿ bōi uá) There is one, which I offered a hundred cash for yet the fisherman wouldn’t sell it to me.
  • 【一尾紅鰽欲二百錢】(Chék-búe âng-tsô àiⁿ nõⁿ-peh-chîⁿ) Two hundred cash for a red-fish.
  • 【鯧魚上減一尾欲百五錢】(Chhieⁿ-hṳ̂ siãng-kiám chék-búe àiⁿ peh-ngõu-chîⁿ) At least one hundred and fifty cash for a flounder.
  • 【馬鮫若是一尾無三百錢免用出】(Bé-ka nãⁿ-sĩ chék-búe bô saⁿ-peh-chîⁿ, mín-ēng tshut) As for mackeral you needn’t offer for it, unless you are prepared to give three hundred cash for it.
  • 【我買零些墨斗佮零些蝦】(Uá bói lân-ló bák-táu, kah tshoh-hê) I bought some cuttle-fish, and some shrimps.
  • 【一條鰻。寡隻蟹】(Chék tiôu mûaⁿ, kuá-chiah hõi) One eel, several crabs.
  • 【十粒蠔。二十粒蚶】(Tsáp-liáp ô, jī-tsáp liáp ham) Ten oysters, twenty cockles.
  • 【魚干六両。佮鹹魚半斤】(Hṳ̂-kuaⁿ lák-niéⁿ, kah kiâm-hṳ̂ pùaⁿ-kṳn) Dried salt fish six taels, and salt fish half a catty.
  • 【蝦米一擔若㩼】(Hê-bí chék-tàⁿ jiéh-tsōi?) How much for a picul of dried prawns?
  • 【一擔敢是五箍亞】(Chék-tàⁿ káⁿ-sĩ ngõu-khou ã) I think five dollars a picul.
  • 【五箍會貴亞袂】(Ngõu-khou õi-kùi a-bõi?) Is it dear at five dollars (a picul)?
  • 【欲呾貴哩袂貴。欲呾平哩袂平】(Àiⁿ-tàⁿ-kùi li bõi-kùi, àiⁿ-tàⁿ-phiⁿ li bõi-phiⁿ) To say “it is dear,” it isn’t dear, but to say “it is cheap,” it isn’t cheap.

  • 【荷蘭豆拍掉皮挈伊的仁】(Hô-lan-tāu, peh-tiòu phûe, khiéh i kâi jîn) Break the pods of the peas and take the seed.
  • 【苦瓜亦是食凉】(Khóu-kue iā-sĩ chiáh-liâng) The bitter vegetable is also taken as a cooling eatables.
  • 【菜豆唐儂炒】(Tshài-tāu Tn̂g-nâng tshá) The Chinese fry long beans.
  • 【芋翕】(Ōu hip) Steam the taro.
  • 【伊欲翕番葛】(I àiⁿ-hip huan-kuah) He wants to steam potatoes
  • 【雞湯落些須芹菜就芳】(Koi-thng lóh tiám-kíaⁿ khṳ̂n-tshài chiũ phang) A little celery put in the soup will make it nice.
  • 【薟椒是番爿來的】(Hiam-chie sĩ huan-pôiⁿ lâi–kâi) Chillies come from foreign countries.
  • 【薟過楜椒】(Hiam-kùe hôu-chie) They are hotter than pepper
  • 【蒜食後口臭】(Sǹg chiáh-lióu tshùi tshàu) After eating garlic the mouth will be foul.
