  • 【我欲過番】(Uá àiⁿ-kùe-huan) I am going to a foreign country.
  • 【汝欲搭底一隻火船】(Lṳ́ àiⁿ-tah tî-chék-chiah húe-tsûn?) By which steamer are you going?
  • 【我欲搭甲板】(Uá àiⁿ-tah kap-pán) I am going by a sailing vessel.
  • 【此底當時怎好搭甲板。逆風】(Chí–tiang-sî tsò-hó tah-kap-pán, ngék-huang) You shouldn’t go by sailing vessel at this time, as the wind is contrary.
  • 【汝寧可搭火船】(Lṳ́ nêng-kò tah húe-tsûn) You had better go by steamer.
  • 【搭彼隻藍煙筒】(Tah hṳ́-chiah nâm-in-tâng) Go by the blue funnel (steamer.)
  • 【明旦瞑起入來】(Màⁿ-mêng-khí jíp–lâi) She comes in to-morrow morning.
  • 【舵工好行了】(Tãi-kong hó-kiâⁿ–lō) Steersman, you had better start now.
  • 【天時好了】(Thiⁿ-sî hó–lō) The weather is fine.
  • 【我起來睇】(Uá khí–kâi thóiⁿ) Let me come up and see.
  • 【哇。雨還了未晴】(Uã! hōu huân-lióu būe-chêⁿ) Oh! the rain hasn’t stopped yet.
  • 【須囝雨囝不畏哪】(Su-kiáⁿ hōu-kiáⁿ, mùiⁿ–nō) You needn’t be afraid of little rain.
  • 【霋時欲浮大風湧】(Khiã-tiām àiⁿ-phû tūa-huang-êng) By and by a storm and large waves will rise.
  • 【敢是欲做風颱啊】(Káⁿ-sĩ àiⁿ-tsò huang-thai ã!) Oh! I think there will be a typhoon.
  • 【來抛加一個椗】(Lâi-pha ke–kâi tèng) Let us let go another anchor.
  • 【此個天時怎好行】(Chiá–thiⁿ-sî tsò-hó-kiâⁿ) Oh, we can’t go on, in this weather.
  • 【今無變。多着在此乞伊吹】(Taⁿ iou-ũ-pōu, lo-tiéh nãⁿ–chié khoih-i-tshue) Now, what help can there be we must stay here and let the wind blow.
  • 【流水哩雄。風哩毋孬】(Lâu-tsúi li hiông, huang li m̃-móⁿ) The tide is strong, and the wind is contrary.
  • 【此隻船好駛】(Chí-chiah-tsûn hó-sái) This boat sails well.
  • 【行猛在】(Kiâⁿ-méⁿ-tsãi) It goes very fast.
  • 【火船免用駛風會行】(Húe-tsûn mín-ēng sái-huang õi-kiâⁿ) Steamers can go without setting sails.
  • 【下次船我就欲去】(Ẽ-tsūa-tsûn uá chiũ-àiⁿ-khṳ̀) I am going next trip.
  • 【直透。無往底塊】(Tít-thàu, bô-kua tî-kò) I go direct without calling any where.
  • 【撐去火船邊】(Theⁿ-khṳ̀ húe-tsûn-piⁿ) Row along the steamer.
  • 【我欲下貨】(Uá àiⁿ-hẽ-hùe) I want to ship cargo.
  • 【撐去船頭】(Theⁿ-khṳ̀ tsún-thâu) Row to the fore-part of the vessel.
  • 【仔細。勿撞着火船】(TSṳ-sòi, màiⁿ siàng-tiéh húe-tsûn) Take care, don’t knock against the steamer.
  • 【火長在底塊】(Húe-tiéⁿ tõ-tî-kò?) Where’s the captain?
  • 【火長起去】(Húe-tiéⁿ khí-khṳ̀) The captain has gone on shore.
  • 【伊霋時就落來】(I khiã-tiām chiũ lóh–lâi) He will come on board by and bye.
  • 【火船有歕嗶亞未】(Húe-tsûn ũ pûn-pi a-būe?) Has the steamer sounder her whistle?
  • 【歕三下了】(Pûn saⁿ-ē–lō) She has whistled three times.
  • 【加一下就欲行】(Ke chék-ē chiũ àiⁿ-kiâⁿ) Once more (the next time) she will start.
  • 【船頭枝桅嘅旗。若是升半橛就欲行】(Tsûn-thâu ki-ûi kâi kî, nāⁿ-sĩ liū pùaⁿ-kuéh chiũ àiⁿ-kiâⁿ) If the flag of the foremast is hoisted half mast high, then the steamer is going to start.
  • 【個儂跋落水底。無儂去撈伊】(Kâi-nâng puáh-lóh tsúi-tói, bô-nâng khṳ̀-liôu i) A man has fallen over board, and no one has gone to pick him up.
  • 【伊無乜會泅】(I bô-mih õi-siû) He can’t swim very well.
  • 【無猛猛去救伊。就着激死】(Bô méⁿ-méⁿ khṳ̀ kiù–i, chiũ-tiéh kek-sí) If he is not saved quickly, he will be drowned.
  • 【汝會氼嗎】(Lṳ́ õi bī mē?) Can you dive?
  • 【無羅經。駛毋識地去】(Bô lô-keⁿ, sái m̃-pat-tò-khṳ) Without a compass we don’t know where to sail to.
