he dare not cry out.

scolds incessantly.

kiaⁿ kàu bŏi jíang;
so frightened that I could not scream.

jíang kàu âu bô̤ siaⁿ;
screeched till hoarse.

àiⁿ jíang li jíang m̄ chut;
wanted to scream but could make no sound.

lṳ́ thiaⁿ úa tàⁿ, màiⁿ cò̤ lṳ́ lí-kẃn jíang;
listen to what I am saying and do not give yourself up to screaming.

What is he bawling about?

i jíang tó thìaⁿ;
he is crying out because he has a pain in his stomach.

jíang hĭⁿ thìaⁿ;
crying with ear-ache.

kìm-cí suang-jíang;
forbid all vociferation.

būe cêng tiaⁿ tîeh i cū jíang;
before he was touched he began to shriek.

thâk to m̄ thâk hó̤-hó̤, cò̤-nî thó-jíang?
When you are reading, why do you not read nicely and not yell?

i saⁿ keⁿ pùaⁿ mêⁿ hó̤-hó̤ sĭ-sĭ thó-jíang;
in the middle of the night, when he is just as well as usual, he shrieks out.

lṳ́ hó̤ jíang i;
you will do well to reprove him.

i khṳt úa jiang lío bo lie hó̤ in;
when I reproved him, he had nothing to say in reply.

úa khṳt i jíang sí;
she blamed me severely.

i cai cŭe lío, taⁿ jíang cē cū hó̤;
he is aware of his fault, now it is enough to merely reprove him.

cêk kĭaⁿ sṳ̄ cū jíang m̄ hàuⁿ hiah;
whenever anything happens, he finds fault most persistently.

cĭeⁿ mn̂g khṳ̀ jíang i;
go to the door and reproach him.
讓

To cede; to give way to; to show respect to others.

lṳ́ hó̤ jĭang i;
you should give place to him.

hiaⁿ-tĭ tîeh hó̤ sie jĭang, m̄ hó̤ sie ceⁿ;
brethren should waive their rights in favour of each other, and should not be at variance.

jĭang kâi ūi khṳt i cŏ̤;
give up your seat to him.
-
jĭang tîo lō khṳt i kùe;
give place for him to pass you on the road.

màiⁿ tó̤ sie jĭang;
do not stand and wait each for the other to take precedence.
